Babe Ruth's Monument Unveiling Original Wire Photograph With Claire, Julia and Eleanor

Babe Ruth's monument is unveiled by his second wife, Claire Hodgson, in this 10 x 8 black and white original wire photograph. His daughter, Julia Ruth, and teammate Lou Gehrig's wife, Eleanor Gehrig, stand to her left. The Yankee stars Ruth and Gehrig had had a volatile relationship while on the team together, and in 1933 the Babe, angry at a comment Gehrig's mother had made about his first daughter, Dorothy, vowed never again to speak to Gehrig off the field. The two did not trade words for six years (until "Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day"on July 4, 1939). Located in the Center Field of Yankee Stadium, Ruth's monument unveiling took place on April 19, 1948. Less than two months later, on June 13, the Babe would make his last appearance at Yankee Stadium, when his number, 3, was retired on the 25th anniversary of the House that Ruth Built. Two months later, on August 16, Ruth passed away at the age of 53. His body lay in state at the entrance of the stadium on August 17 and 18, where over 100,000 people came to pay their final respects. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
