Winston Churchill Signed Old Vic Theater Archive

This is a great collection of material relating to The Old Vic Theatre, 1930’s from Mrs. St. John Hutchinson comprised of the following: A two-page typed draft (undated) for an appeal to friends of the Old Vic for subscription to acquire the scenery and costumes designed by McKnight Kauffer for a production of Othello at the St. James Theatre, signed by Winston Churchill; a selection of material relating to the competition to design the safety curtain of the Old Vic in 1938 including: A typed letter (11th April 1938) to Mrs. Mary Hutchinson, who was organizing the competition, from Evelyn Williams the clerk of the Old Vic; A telegram (12th May 1938) from Clementine Churchill to Mary Hutchinson which reads “Winston delighted to do what you wish,” a copy of the final competition announcement, with Churchill, Kenneth Clark and C.B. Cochran announced as judges (folded); a handwritten letter from Gwendoline Churchill (Winston’s sister-in-law) to Mrs. Hutchinson thanking her for an invitation to a reception; a thank you letter from Churchill acknowledging his 90th Birthday and a typed letter signed by Charles Pick, the Managing Director of William Heinemann Publishers, dated 16 August 1966 to Mr. James Heinemann, a previous owner of these items; all in a blue morocco backed cloth flap case with leather label.
