SOLD Ulysses S. Grant Signature as Lieutenant General (1864) With Original Carte De Visite

SOLD This is among the finest signatures of Ulysses S. Grant; legendary former U.S. President and General-in-Chief of President Abraham Lincoln's Union Army in the Civil War that we have ever seen. Signed “Respectfully yours, U. S. Grant,” and inscribed with his special rank “Lt. Gen. U.S.A.,” the rank which Lincoln promoted Grant as the general in command of the entire Union army to be differentiated from other commanders of the rank of general. As Lieutenant General, Lincoln as Commander in Chief was Grant’s only superior officer. Grant’s fountain pen signature is boldly signed on lightly lined paper (4.5 X 1.75) clipped from a larger page and mounted in a window cut out of a blank book page. This extraordinary signature was found in an extra illustrated volume of “History of the City of New York” by Mary L. Booth (published 1867) that once belonged to the library of Senator Charles B. Farwell of Chicago (d. 1903). Grant’s signature is framed with an original carte de visite of Grant (2.375 X 4) published by a prominent New York City Studio. Considered one of the most masterful generals in American History, if not World History, Grant (along with General William Tecumseh Sherman) led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War and accepted General Robert E. Lee's surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
