Sir Winston Churchill World War II Folk Art Wine Stopper
During World War II it was not unusual for soldiers and Americans back home to handcraft patriotic artifacts that are now valued more as folk art as much as military collectibles. This hand-carved wine stopper is a particularly well done example surviving from the war era. Carved in great detail with caricature accuracy, the head carving of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill sits atop the cork stopper measuring about 4.5 inches tall from the top of his head to the bottom of the cork and about 3 inches at its widest point measured from the tip of his “trademark cigar” to the back of his head. No effort was spared in carving and painting the likeness of this great English wartime hero, with cigar in mouth. Churchill’s love of cigars is reported to have begun around 1895 when at the young age of 21-22, Churchill was commissioned to report from Cuba on their War of Independence. Sir Winston Churchill is best remembered for his leadership as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leading his nation through the darkest times of World War II.
