Knute Rockne’s Personal Pocket Watch Found at Fatal Plane Crash Site

Perhaps no story in all of sports transcends the story of Notre Dame’s most legendary alumni and football Coach Knute Rockne. As a youngster, having learned to play football in the streets of Chicago where he grew up, Rockne dreamed of attending Notre Dame. After years of working in a Post Office, Rockne fulfilled his aspiration and entered Notre Dame as a 22 year old freshman; winning All-American honors on their football team and revolutionizing the game with his development of the forward pass. After graduating in 1914 Rockne played professional football for five years before going back to his alma mater to become Notre Dame’s football Coach where he established his legacy as the greatest coach in college football history. Over the next 13 years, Rockne led Notre Dame to five undefeated seasons and three national championships. His 105 wins, 12 losses and 5 ties for a .881 winning percentage is still unrivaled. His championship football teams made Notre Dame one of the most famous universities in the nation, a status unheard of for a non-Ivy League school. Without question what is offered here is one of the most prized possessions belonging to Knute Rockne himself. When Rockne celebrated his first Christmas with his wife Bonnie in 1915, she gifted him a gold Chesterfield pocket watch made by the South Bend Watch Company with Rockne’s initials “KKR” beautifully etched on one side. The watch obviously had significant meaning to Rockne himself as this is the very same watch found in Rockne’s suit vest pocket recovered from the site of his tragic fatal plane crash March 1931 enroute to California to participate in the production of the film coincidently titled the “Spirit of Notre Dame.” Following Rockne’s death the watch was passed on to Rockne’s close friend and neighbor Reverend Vincent Brennan whose family will provide additional provenance and has maintained possession ever since. This watch epitomizes the very essence of Rockne’s commitment to his family and the Notre Dame family, and spirit that will forever live on in the annals of Notre Dame football history. This museum quality artifact deserves a place in the finest Notre Dame or football collection. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
