Joe Louis and Max Schmeling Signed Ltd. Edition Sports Illustrated Magazine Lithograph

From a rare limited set of signed lithographs issued in the early 1970’s by Sports Illustrated magazine featuring historic events in different sports is this 21.5 X 16.5 color lithograph signed by boxing icons Joe Louis and Max Schmeling that depicts a colorful artistic rendering of their historic World Heavyweight Championship Prizefight fought at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 1938. This was a rematch from an earlier contest in 1936 in which Schmeling delivered Joe Louis’s first loss, becoming a “Nazi” hero in the process. This fight dubbed “The Fight of the Century,” broadcast to one of the largest radio audiences to ever tune in to a boxing broadcast had no such outcome as Louis pummeled Schmeling to end the fight in the first round delivering a blow to Hitler besides, who had just begun making advances in Europe. The beautiful limited edition lithograph is pencil signed by both combatants and numbered as one of a limited edition “433/1500.” A very desirable signed boxing display that would fit into the finest sports memorabilia collections. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
