Jerry Garcia Handwritten and Signed Letter with Grateful Dead Logo Drawing

Grateful Dead front man Jerry Garcia has written and signed this personal note with his added drawing of a “lightning skull”, made on a piece of 8.5 X 10.5 stationery from Saybrook Institute Graduate School and Research Center, San Francisco. Significantly, this is the ONLY KNOWN example of the famous “Deadhead” skull logo drawn by Jerry Garcia. Garcia’s letter is accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance explaining the unique circumstance surrounding it. Garcia writes in 1992, “To Stuart Live Long & Prosper!,” and signs “Jerry Garcia,” with his added sketch of a lightning skull on the occasion of visiting a longtime friend and distinguished humanistic psychologist who years earlier participated in a telepathy project with the Grateful Dead and who now upon a surprise visit from Garcia was helping him to quit smoking. Stuart was asked to participate from his position of naturopath at the Atkins Center nearby. The ultimate recommendation was made as outlined in the letter of provenance, for Garcia to “stop eating sweets (like ice cream), balance his diet better, lose weight, and take several beneficial supplements.” While we don’t know if Garcia succeeded in his quest to quit smoking or if he undertook a change in diet and habits; he did write this personal note as a way of saying thanks for such sage advice. The Grateful Dead were the ultimate cult band, with one of pop music’s most fervent and celebrated fan following. With a career that lasted over three decades, beginning in the early 60’s (when they were known as “The Warlocks”), the band’s touring days came to an end in 1995 with the tragic death of front man Jerry Garcia, who for most fans was the heart and soul of the Dead. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
