Janis Joplin 1968 Handwritten & Signed Historic Letter to Linda Gravenites

Rock and blues legend Janis Joplin has handwritten and signed this historic three page letter to her close friend Linda Gravenites where she excitedly writes of her first New York City review after her first City performance (February 17, 1968 Anderson Theatre). The letter which is written on 6 X 9 stationery using fine black felt tip pen is dated “2-20.” Joplin writes “Look! Our first New York review after our first New York performance! Too much…we had a press party & …the Columbia thing came through so we signed & made the big announcement -it’s official. We start recording live as soon as possible…That’s the key to adjusting in N.Y. Drink a lot & get used to spending time in bars & wow, we’re the right group!” Joplin’s band “Cheap Thrills” recorded for the first time as “Janis Joplin and Big Band & the Holding Company.” Joplin provides some of the landmark history concerning the famous Chelsea hotel where she was staying and mentions preparation for a photo session with Richard Avedon and work for the album cover, “We think we’ll use the one of us all naked in bed together looking like the real thing. Should be fun anyway.” Joplin signs adding her address at the Chelsea Hotel “Bye, I’ll write again XX Janice.” Joplin would continue to gain worldwide fame and with it, alcohol, drugs and a hard life on the road ending in her death by overdose in January, 1970 at the age of 27.
