Not only was Mitchell famous for facing, and beating, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth in an exhibition game, she was only 17 years-old at the time pitching as the first female Minor Leaguer since 1898 when she struck out both stars back-to-back. Starting with women's teams as a teenager, she went on to earn a spot on the Chattanooga Lookouts for this exhibition match that made history and headlines that Ruth and Gehrig may have wanted to quickly forget about. Gilbert died in 1987 before the popularity of autograph shows, with detailed signings such as this very obscure. Baseballs signed by Jackie Mitchell Gilbert have sold for five-figures.
