Henry Flagler Signed "Standard Oil" Stock Certificate

Henry Flagler, real estate and railroad entrepreneur and president of the Standard Oil Company (1830-1913) which he co-founded with oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, has signed this Standard Oil Trust stock certificate as company Secretary “H.M. Flagler,” in black fountain pen. The certificate for 8 shares is dated September 20, 1893 and co-signed by Attorney in fact, Wesley H. Tilford. The certificate has a 4 X 8 receipt affixed to the left edge and on the verso is stamped, notated and signed for the assignment of the shares in 1899. By then Rockefeller's and Flagler’s Standard Oil Company controlled about 90% of the refined oil production in the USA. Besides the oil business, Flagler is known as the father of Miami and Palm Beach, Florida where he set out to make Florida the “Newport of the South” by developing extensive rail access and grand hotels to lure wealthy vacationers, including what is now the famous Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach.
