David Atchison "President of the United States for One Day" Signature

This signature of politician David Atchison has been beautifully signed in black fountain pen. Atchison served in the U.S. Senate from 1843 to 1855. His colleagues elected him president pro tempore on 13 occasions. He is best known for the claim that for one day (March 4, 1849) he was Acting President of the United States. On Sunday, March 4, 1849, outgoing President James Polk's term ended at noon. His successor, Zachary Taylor, refused to be sworn into office on Sunday due to his religious beliefs. As President pro tempore, and therefore Acting Vice President, under the presidential succession law in place at the time, Atchison was believed by some to be Acting President. Atchison was 41 years old at the time of the One-Day Presidency, younger than any official President. He died on January 26, 1886, at the age of 78. Signature is extremely rare. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
