Russian Cosmonaut Boris Volynov, the first Jewish Cosmonaut has signed this special First Day of Issue envelope, commemorating the Russian exploration of outer space, in blue ballpoint pen. Volynov flew on two Soviet Soyuz space missions, Soyuz 5 taking off January 15th 1969 and Soyuz 21, July 6th 1976.Volynov was assigned as one of two possible commanders training for Voskhod 1 in 1964, but he and his fellow crewmembers were bumped three days before the scheduled launch date.
