Astronaut Richard H. Truly has signed and inscribed this official NASA 8 x 10 color photograph, "To Arthur O. Shackman, Richard Truly" in black felt tip pen. Truly, who was the eighth Administrator of NASA (1989 to 1992), became an astronaut in 1969 and piloted the two of the five free-flights of the Space Shuttle Enterprise in 1977. In addition, Truly piloted the Columbia (November 12 - 14, 1981) and was commander of Challenger (August 30 - September 5, 1983).  After the Challenger disaster in 1986 Truly returned to NASA as the Associate Administrator for Space Flight and played an integral role in the decisions made in the aftermath and determining the root cause of the ill-fated mission that had resulted in the death of the entire Challenger crew.
