Astronaut Gordon Cooper Signed & Inscribed Photograph

Astronaut Gordon Cooper has signed and inscribed this 8 x 10 color photograph, "To Bess Holmes - Congratulations, Bess, on your 100th Birthday!! God Bless You - Gordon Cooper" in black sharpie pen.  Gordon was one of the first seven astronauts picked by NASA for the first U.S. manned space-effort, Project Mercury. As such he played a key role in the beginning of the space program as each astronaut was assigned different parts of the project. Among his tasks, Cooper specialized in the "Redstone Rocket, developed a personal survival knife for the astronauts to carry in the spacecraft and chaired the "Emergency Egress Committee," responsible for working out the emergency launch pad procedures for escape.  Cooper flew two missions into space, the first on May 16, 1963 aboard the Mercury-Atlas 9 (Faith 7) spacecraft, orbiting the earth 22 times.  On August 21, 1965 Cooper flew as command pilot of Gemini 5, an eight-day, 120-orbit mission with Pete Conrad, establishing a new space endurance record and proving that astronauts could survive in space for the length of time necessary to travel to the Moon and return to Earth.
