Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards Namesake Signed American Theatre Wing Card

This historically significant theatrical artifact is an American Theatre Wing War Service, Inc. membership card signed by famed theatrical actress and director and co-founder of the American Theatre Wing, Mary Antoinette “Tony” Perry (1888-1946) in whose name the Tony Awards are named. The card (3.75 X 2.75) is also countersigned by actress Eloise Sheldon and certifies that “Mrs. Esther Leeds” is a “Service” member of the organization with dues paid to “6/1/43.” After Perry’s death, the Tony Awards formally named “The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre,” were founded in her honor. The award made its’ official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1947 and have since been awarded at an annual ceremony in New York City to recognize achievement in live Broadway Theatre.
