1951 NY Yankees WS Ticket (Gm 2) & Mickey Mantle Historic Injury Original Photograph

This historic ensemble consists of an original full ticket stub for Game 2 of the 1951 World Series played at Yankee Stadium on October 5th between the New York Yankees and the New York Giants and an original photograph of the famous play in the 5th inning picturing Mickey Mantle on the ground as DiMaggio makes a catch in the outfield in what would result in the most famous knee injury in the history of the New York Yankees. This World Series marked the beginning of a new era in baseball with the participation of two future superstars playing in their very first World Series during their rookie seasons, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. This was also the only World Series in which Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio played together. The biggest play of this Game occurred in the 5th inning, Giants rookie sensation Willie Mays, hit a ball to deep right center field. Mantle playing right field and DiMaggio in center, went for the ball. Mantle in his first season, was a speedster and DiMaggio in his last season, may have lost a step. According to Mickey Mantle: “Casey had told me before the game, ‘Take everything you can get to right field.’ Of Mays’s ball, Mantle said: “I was running as hard as I could to get over to it because Casey had told me before the game about how Joe had slowed up a little bit, he thought. Well, anyway, when I get there, Joe is already standing under the ball. He said, ‘I got it.’ And you don’t want to run into Joe DiMaggio. So when I tried to stop — I was going as fast as I could — my back cleat in my spike stuck in a rubber drain, and when it did, my knee went right out through the front of my leg and I just folded up on the field.” Mickey Mantle was carried off the field on a stretcher, to the horror of 66,018 in attendance at Yankee Stadium. Mantles injury took him out of this series making it the last time that he and DiMaggio would be on the field together in an official game and would persist throughout his career. Mantle later replaced DiMaggio in centerfield upon DiMaggio's retirement in 1952. The Yankees prevailed in this World Series to earn their new rookie star, Mickey Mantle his first World Series ring and Joe DiMaggio his last. In a twist of fate, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle will always be compared as the two greatest center fielders ever to wear a Yankee uniform.
