The Supreme Court of the United States referred to as “The Stone Court” headed by Harlan F. Stone as Chief Justice of the United States (1941-1946) is pictured in this original 10 X 8 original black and white photograph. Posed in their formal judicial robes are all nine justices identified on the news caption dated 11-24-41 attached on verso, including: Stanley F. Reed, Owen J. Roberts, Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone, Hugo L. Black, Felix Frankfurter, James F. Byrnes, William O. Douglas, Frank Murphy and Robert Jackson. As the Court presiding over the country during World War II, the Stone Court issued several important war-time rulings including deciding that the Free Speech Clause protected students from being forced to salute the American Flag or recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
