1900 Ellis Island Original Handwritten and Signed Construction Voucher

Dated November, 1900 this is an original signed payment receipt (8 X 10.5) related to the construction of the second Immigrant Building on Ellis Island which served as the gateway for millions of immigrants entering the United States. The first such building on Ellis Island opened on January, 1892 and was completely destroyed by fire in 1897. Opening in December, 1900 this second building was designed in French Renaissance Revival style and built of red brick and limestone trim. By the time Ellis Island closed in 1954, more than 12 million immigrants had been processed by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration. This is a great artifact that acknowledges the great history of Ellis Island which has long since been designated a National landmark and later made part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
