1891 Sheriff Pat F. Garrett Signed Archive (Man Who Shot Billy The Kid)

Famous lawman Patrick Floyd Garrett, the New Mexico sheriff who tracked down and shot "Billy The Kid" (William H. Bonney) in 1881, signed this Witness Bail Bond, (subpoena), dated February 5, 1891 in black fountain pen. This document, in which Garrett is the principal and F.H. Mendenhall is the defendant, pertains to a court case involving the forgery of Garrett's signature and states that Garrett is indebted to the state of Texas for $150.00 unless he appears in court in Pecos City on March 2, 1891. Garrett's real signature, "Pat F. Garrett," appears on the lower right side of the document, along with two other witnesses, the sheriff, George A. Frayer, and his deputy. Two additional documents in this archive are the Witness Attachment dated January 24, 1891, commanding the sheriff to take Garrett and bring him before the court, and the Indictment, dated September 3, 1890, which states the forgery offense and lists the jurors on the verso. Pat Garrett’s signature is relatively scarce. This is an exceptional example and one pertaining to his forged signature is historically interesting. Comes with a certificate that unconditionally guarantees the authenticity of this item.
